Why does new construction still get hard water?
Because a new house draws from the same Floridan aquifer as every other home. A builder can give you new pipes, new fixtures and a new water heater, but the water still sits in limestone and picks up calcium and magnesium before the county's wells pump it out.
In a new home, you tend to notice it within the first couple of weeks:

None of that means anything is wrong with the house. It is hard, chlorinated aquifer water meeting new surfaces.
What is the softener loop in your garage?
It is a connection your builder roughed in for a water softener. Look near the water heater or where the main line enters the house for two capped pipes, often with a short loop of pipe between them.
A roughed-in loop with no equipment on it still helps you. We connect the system at the loop without cutting into finished walls, and the install is usually one visit. If there is no loop, we tie into the main line instead, which takes a little more work.
What does scale do to a new tankless water heater?
It coats the heat exchanger, the narrow passage the water flows through while the heater warms it on demand. Manufacturers publish water quality limits in their installation manuals for that reason.
A softener installed at the start keeps the heat exchanger clean. Once scale has formed, the heater needs descaling to get its efficiency back.
What should a new household do about drinking water?
Treat it separately, because a softener fixes hardness and doesn't change what you drink.

Weeki Wachee is a place, not a city
Weeki Wachee stopped being a city in 2020. Its population was tiny, and the area folded into unincorporated Hernando County. The name stayed on the spring, the river and the mailing addresses. ZIP code 34613 now spans North Weeki Wachee, Brookridge, High Point and Wiscon, plus the big new communities along US-19.
That matters for your water, because there is no Weeki Wachee water department. Homes on public water here are served by Hernando County Utilities, which runs several systems. Its largest, West Hernando, includes treatment plants named Weeki Wachee and Hexam Road. Your bill names your system, and each system publishes its own annual report.
The county's reports describe Floridan aquifer water from deep wells. None of them list hardness, so the reading that sizes your softener comes from your own tap.
The spring and your tap share an aquifer. The Southwest Florida Water Management District maps the Weeki Wachee springshed at about 240 square miles across southwest Hernando and northern Pasco. The groundwater under those neighborhoods feeds the spring, and the county's wells draw from the same Floridan aquifer. The District reports nitrate in many of the system's springs running higher than historical levels.

Tankless heaters push water through narrow heat exchangers, and their manuals set water quality limits. Treat the water before scale gets a start.

Check the bill, then the report
Hernando County Utilities runs several water systems, and each one has its own annual report. The system name on your bill tells you which to read.

No water bill means a well
A pump and pressure tank with no monthly bill means a private well. Nobody treats that water, and Florida health officials advise testing it yearly.

Is Weeki Wachee tap water safe to drink?
County water in the area comes from Hernando County Utilities, which reports every regulated contaminant under its federal limit in its 2025 water quality reports. Treatment at home deals with hardness, taste and preference. Private wells are different and should be tested every year.
How hard is the water in Weeki Wachee?
Hard, like most Floridan aquifer water. Hernando County's reports do not include a hardness figure, because utilities are not required to publish one, so numbers online are estimates. Our free test measures it at your tap.
