THE SHORT ANSWER
What is in Spring Hill tap water?
Groundwater from deep Floridan aquifer wells, treated with chlorine and little else. The county's 2025 report for the West Hernando system, which serves Spring Hill, shows every regulated contaminant under its federal limit.
The report leaves out hardness, because Florida utilities are not required to publish it. Aquifer water moves through limestone and picks up calcium and magnesium, and you see that as spots on glass and crust on fixtures. The chlorine taste comes from disinfection. A free test gives you both readings for your address.

Where does Spring Hill's water come from?
It comes from deep wells in the Floridan aquifer, run by Hernando County Utilities. The county bought the Spring Hill utility systems from Florida Water Services, and today Spring Hill is served by West Hernando, the county's largest water system. The EPA's records show it serving about 145,000 people through roughly 20 treatment plants.
The county describes the water as consistently high quality and says it needs no treatment other than chlorination. That is a very different setup from Tampa, where river water goes through coagulation, ozone and filtration before it reaches you.
If your home sits inside Brooksville city limits, you are on the City of Brooksville utility instead, and its report is the one to read.
Does Spring Hill water use chlorine or chloramine?
Chlorine. West Hernando disinfected with chlorine at an annual average of 1.48 parts per million in 2025, while Tampa and Pasco County use chloramine.
Chlorine smells and tastes stronger at the tap, so you are more likely to notice a pool smell here. The upside is that chlorine is easier to remove. Standard activated carbon takes it out well, so a whole-house carbon tank here does not need to be sized for the slower chemistry of chloramine.
Chlorine also reacts with trace organic matter to form byproducts called trihalomethanes. West Hernando's highest running average for them in 2025 was 9.29 parts per billion, against a federal limit of 80.
How hard is Spring Hill water?
Hard, but nobody publishes the number. Hernando County's reports do not list hardness, and neither do most Florida utility reports, because hardness affects your pipes and your skin rather than your health.
You still live with it:
Cloudy film on glassware that survives the dishwasher
White crust on faucets and shower heads
Soap and shampoo that won't lather
Scale collecting inside the water heater, where you can't see it
Hardness is one of the readings we take at every free water test. It takes a few minutes, and it is the number your softener gets sized on.
Do you need to filter water that meets the legal limits?
You don't have to. Every regulated result in the 2025 West Hernando report sits under its federal limit.
Independent groups such as the Environmental Working Group publish health guidelines stricter than federal law. Those are advisory targets, not enforceable rules, and your water is not unsafe because it misses one.
Some families still want to go further for the water they drink, especially with a baby in the house. A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink reduces nitrate, arsenic, PFAS and dissolved minerals in one step, and we include it at no charge with a qualifying whole-home installation.
What if your Spring Hill home is on a private well?
Then nobody treats your water before it reaches the tap. If you have a pump and a pressure tank and no water bill, you are on a private well.
Florida well water can carry iron, which stains fixtures orange, and hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. The Florida Department of Health recommends testing a private well at least once a year for bacteria and nitrate.
When the test shows iron or sulfur, iron and sulfur removal goes in first, with softening after it.
Does a water softener waste water during the shortage?
A timer-based one can. The Southwest Florida Water Management District has Hernando County under a Modified Phase III water shortage through March 31, 2027, which limits lawn watering to one day a week.
A timer-based softener regenerates on a set schedule whether you used the water or not. A metered, demand-initiated valve counts the gallons and regenerates only when the resin needs it, so it sends less water down the drain.

What we install in Spring Hill homes
Most Spring Hill homes need one of these three. The test at your sink decides which, and whether you need anything.

Dual-media city water treatment
A softener and a carbon tank that run as one system. It takes out the hardness and strips the chlorine taste from every tap and shower.
county water with scale and a chlorine taste

Reverse osmosis
A membrane system under the kitchen sink with its own faucet. It reduces nitrate, arsenic and PFAS in the water you drink and cook with.
drinking water, coffee, ice and baby formula

Iron and sulfur removal
For homes on a private well. It clears orange staining and the rotten-egg smell before the water reaches a softener or your fixtures.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What West Hernando's 2025 report shows
Hernando County Utilities publishes a separate report for each of its systems. The 2025 report for West Hernando, the county's largest system and the one that serves Spring Hill, lists every regulated result under its federal limit. Four lines are worth knowing.
Nitrate reached 2.5 parts per million, against a limit of 10. Arsenic topped out at 1.5 parts per billion, against a limit of 10. At customer taps, the 90th percentile lead result was 1.3 parts per billion, and no site exceeded the action level of 15. Total trihalomethanes, a byproduct of disinfection, averaged no more than 9.29 parts per billion at any monitoring site, against a limit of 80. The arsenic and lead figures come from the most recent required sampling, in 2023.
The report has no hardness figure. Any grains-per-gallon number you find online for Spring Hill is someone's estimate, so we measure yours at the sink.

On PFAS. West Hernando sampled for the EPA's UCMR 5 study in April and October 2024. PFOS averaged 2.53 parts per trillion, with a highest single result of 8.6, and PFOA averaged 2.2. The federal limit for each is 4.0, judged on a running annual average, with compliance due by 2029. A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink reduces both.

Living with the system
What ownership actually looks like
Once a month
Top up the brine tank
Keep the salt above the water line in the brine tank. When the salt runs out the softener stops working, and the crust starts rebuilding on your fixtures.
When chlorine returns
Carbon media
The carbon bed wears down as it takes chlorine out of the water. When the pool taste comes back at the kitchen tap, the media is due for replacement.
Every 6 to 12 months
RO cartridges
The pre- and post-filters protect the membrane. Swap them on schedule and the membrane lasts for years. We send a reminder and can handle the change.

Advice we give every homeowner
01
Read the name on your water bill
Inside Brooksville city limits you are on the City of Brooksville utility, which is separate from the county. The bill tells you whose report to read.
02
Ask for a metered softener
Hernando County is under a water shortage order through March 31, 2027. A metered valve regenerates on actual use, not on a timer, and wastes less water.
03
Chlorine is the easier one to filter
West Hernando uses chlorine, not chloramine. Standard activated carbon handles chlorine well, so ask what a quote includes before paying for more.
04
Run the tap after a trip away
The county's advice for water that has sat for hours: run the tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before you drink it or cook with it.
Questions we get asked
Spring Hill water FAQ
Is Spring Hill tap water safe to drink?
Yes. Hernando County Utilities' 2025 report for the West Hernando system, which serves Spring Hill, shows every regulated contaminant under its federal limit. Home treatment here deals with hardness, the chlorine taste and personal preference rather than a safety problem.
How hard is the water in Spring Hill?
Hard, but Hernando County does not publish a hardness figure, because utilities are not required to report it. Numbers you see online are estimates. Our free test measures hardness at your kitchen sink in a few minutes.
Does Spring Hill water use chlorine or chloramine?
Chlorine. The West Hernando system disinfects with chlorine, which averaged 1.48 parts per million in 2025. It tastes stronger than chloramine but is easier to filter, and standard activated carbon removes it at every tap.
Which utility serves my Spring Hill home?
Most Spring Hill homes are on Hernando County Utilities' West Hernando system. Homes inside Brooksville city limits are on the separate City of Brooksville utility, and some rural properties run private wells. Your water bill names your provider.
Does Spring Hill water have PFAS?
West Hernando's 2024 samples for the EPA's UCMR 5 study found PFOS averaging 2.53 parts per trillion and PFOA averaging 2.2. The federal limit of 4.0 applies to running annual averages from 2029. Reverse osmosis reduces both at your kitchen tap.
Do new Spring Hill homes need a water softener?
A new house draws the same aquifer water as an older one, so hardness is the same. Many new builds come with a softener loop, two capped pipes in the garage, which makes installation simpler. We check for one during the free test.
