Is reverse osmosis worth it in a Tampa Bay home?
Yes, if you are buying bottled water, mixing baby formula, or you do not like how your tap tastes. A reverse osmosis system replaces all of that at the kitchen sink for a few cents a gallon.
Reverse osmosis also reduces dissolved contaminants that a whole-home carbon filter is not designed to remove, including PFAS, arsenic, lead and nitrate. It does not soften the water in the rest of the house, so most Tampa Bay homes end up running a softener and an RO system together. What a reverse osmosis system actually does
Your whole-home system handles the water in every pipe: hardness, chlorine, iron, odor. Reverse osmosis handles the water you drink. Different job, different tool.
RO water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane under household pressure. The water molecules pass through. Most dissolved solids, metals and chemicals do not, and they rinse away to the drain. What comes out of the dedicated faucet is clean, flat-tasting and consistent.
That is why reverse osmosis is the standard for drinking, cooking, ice, coffee and baby formula. It is also why a pitcher filter is not a substitute. A carbon pitcher improves taste, but it does not remove dissolved metals or most chemical contaminants.
What reverse osmosis removes from Tampa Bay water

On city water
If you are on a municipal supply, your utility already disinfects the water to meet federal and state safety standards. What it cannot do is make the water taste the way you want, or remove every dissolved contaminant people ask us about. The EPA lists reverse osmosis among the treatments effective at reducing PFAS in drinking water, which is why the question comes up so often across Tampa Bay right now.
On well water
On a private well, reverse osmosis is the last step and not the first. Iron, sulfur and sediment need to come out before the water reaches the membrane, or you will shorten its life quickly. We treat the whole house first with iron and sulfur removal, then polish the drinking water with RO.
4-stage vs 5-stage: what the extra stage buys you
The membrane does the heavy lifting in both. The difference is the polishing stage.
4-stage. Sediment pre-filter, carbon pre-filter, RO membrane, carbon post-filter. Excellent water, fewer filters to change.
5-stage. Adds one more stage, usually a second carbon polish or a remineralization cartridge that puts a few minerals back for a rounder taste.
Neither is better in every home. If RO water tastes too flat to you, remineralization is worth it. If you want the simplest system to maintain, four stages is plenty. What matters more than stage count is membrane quality and a correct installation.
What does installation involve?
A standard under-sink install is a single visit. We confirm your water test results and where the unit will sit, tie into the cold line and drain, mount the storage tank in the cabinet, and install a dedicated drinking-water faucet at the sink. If you want it, we run a line to the refrigerator and ice maker. Then we flush the system, check the water, and show you how it works before we leave.
Is reverse osmosis right for your home?
Reverse osmosis makes the most sense if you are buying bottled water, mixing baby formula, brewing coffee you care about, or you have read about PFAS and want to reduce it at the tap. It makes less sense as a standalone fix if your real problem is scale on the fixtures and film in the shower. That is hardness, and that is a softener job. Many Tampa Bay homes end up with both, which is what our city water treatment systems are built around.

What is actually in Tampa Bay tap water
The City of Tampa draws most of its supply from the Hillsborough River, and its own Water Department publishes hardness between 140 and 300 ppm, which is 8 to 17 grains per gallon. That range moves with the season: lower in the wet months, higher in the dry ones. Any site quoting Tampa a single fixed hardness number is guessing.
Pasco County is a different story. Pasco Utilities disinfects with chloramine and monitors more than 80 contaminants, but its Consumer Confidence Reports do not publish hardness at all, because hardness is an aesthetic parameter utilities are not required to report. Every Pasco grains-per-gallon figure online is a third-party estimate, and they contradict each other badly. We have seen everything from 6.4 to 21 gpg quoted for the same county.
That is exactly why we lead with a free test instead of a published number. Your street, your well depth and your plumbing decide your water, not a county average.
On PFAS in Pasco. Under the EPA UCMR 5 study, Pasco County Utilities sampled quarterly from July 2023. Most delivery points came back non-detect. Two did not: the Southeast Water Treatment Plant showed PFOS around 7.4 to 8.1 ppt, and the Lakebridge Connection showed lower detections. The EPA Hazard Index calculated to 0.00 at every point, which means no combined exceedance. It is worth knowing, and it is not worth losing sleep over.

Test before you shop
Every quote you get should be built on your own numbers. A company that recommends a system before testing is selling from a catalog, not solving your problem.

RO does not replace a softener
Reverse osmosis treats one faucet. Scale in the water heater, spots on the glasses and film in the shower are whole-home problems, and only a softener fixes those.

Ask about the fridge line
Running a line to the refrigerator and ice maker is worth deciding on before install day. Doing it during the original visit is far simpler than adding it later.

Well homes treat first, polish second
Iron, sulfur and sediment have to come out upstream. Put an RO membrane on untreated well water and you will be replacing it far too often.

Is a reverse osmosis system worth it in Tampa?
If you're buying bottled water or you don't like how your tap water tastes, yes, RO replaces both at the kitchen sink. Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?
Reverse osmosis is listed by the EPA among the effective treatments for reducing PFAS in drinking water. It's the most common option we install for homeowners who want to address PFAS at the tap. Testing first tells you whether it's a priority for your home.
How much does a reverse osmosis system cost installed?
It depends on the configuration and whether you add a refrigerator line. Your free water test comes with an exact, itemized quote and no obligation.
Do I still need a water softener if I have RO?
Usually, yes. RO treats only the water at that one faucet. Hardness that scales your water heater, spots your dishes, and dries your skin is a whole-home problem, and a softener is what fixes it.
How often do RO filters need changing?
Pre- and post-filters are changed on a regular schedule, and the membrane lasts several years. We'll set you up with a reminder and can handle the service for you.
Can you run a line to my refrigerator and ice maker?
Yes, and it is worth deciding before install day. Running the line during the original visit is much simpler than adding it afterwards, because the cabinet is already open and the tie-in is already exposed. Mention it when you book and we will plan the route.
