Water Treatment in Brooksville, Florida

Brooksville has its own water utility, separate from Hernando County's, and plenty of homes just outside town run on private wells. All of it comes from the same deep Floridan aquifer. We test at your sink, work out which water you have, and size a system to that answer.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Is Brooksville on city water or county water?

Inside city limits, it is the City of Brooksville's own utility. Hernando County's plan describes the city and county systems as independent, joined by a single interconnect, and each publishes its own water quality report.

The city draws from six deep wells, each about 600 feet into the Floridan aquifer, and disinfects with chlorine. Homes outside town may be on Hernando County Utilities or a private well. Your water bill tells you which, and a free test shows what the water is doing at your sink.

Where does Brooksville's water come from?

It comes from six city wells, each about 600 feet deep in the Floridan aquifer. The City of Brooksville chlorinates the water and pipes it to about 11,500 people.

Brooksville, the county seat of Hernando County, runs this utility itself. Hernando County Utilities serves most of the county outside the city, and the county describes the two systems as independent apart from one interconnect.

One local change: the City Council voted 5 to 0 in April 2024 to stop adding fluoride to city water.

Past the edge of both systems, many rural properties pump their own water from private wells.

How can you tell which water your home has?

Look at your bill. A City of Brooksville bill means city water, and a Hernando County Utilities bill means county water.

No bill, and a pump and pressure tank on the property, means a private well. That matters more than anything else on this page, because the treatment is completely different.

What does city water need in Brooksville?

Usually a softener and a carbon stage. The city's report shows every regulated contaminant under its federal limit, so the complaints we hear are about hardness and the chlorine taste.

Hardness shows up as:

  • White spots on dishes and glass shower doors

  • Crust on faucets and shower heads

  • Scale inside the water heater and dishwasher

  • Soap that won't lather

A dual-media city water treatment system handles both in one install. Carbon also reduces disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes.

What does well water need around Brooksville?

It needs a test first, because nobody treats a private well but you. The Florida Department of Health recommends testing for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year, and its Hernando office accepts well samples for bacteria testing at its Spring Hill Environmental Division.

Florida well water can carry iron, which stains fixtures orange, and hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. Iron and sulfur removal goes in first, sized to your well's flow rate, with a softener after it for hardness.

Should you filter your drinking water too?

Only if you want to go further than the legal limits. A reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink reduces nitrate, arsenic, PFAS and dissolved minerals in the water you drink and cook with.

We include it at no charge with a qualifying whole-home installation.

What happens at your free water test?

We test at your kitchen sink, confirm whether you are on city water, county water or a well, and walk you through each reading. The visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

You get a recommendation sized to your numbers. If your water only needs a softener, that is all we quote.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

What the City of Brooksville reports

The city's 2025 water quality report goes further than most on geology. It puts the Floridan aquifer beneath Brooksville at an estimated 900 feet deep, holding about 113 trillion gallons, recharged by roughly 20 inches of rain a year in the Brooksville area.

The results are clean. The state's 2025 source water assessment found no potential sources of contamination near the city's wells, nitrate topped out at 0.79 parts per million against a limit of 10, and lead at customer taps measured 0.13 parts per billion at the 90th percentile.

The report does not list hardness, so the number that sizes a softener comes from your own tap.

Rainstorm over a Florida neighborhood

One number to know. Total trihalomethanes, a byproduct of chlorine disinfection, reached 27.21 parts per billion in the city's September 2025 sampling. That is well under the federal limit of 80. It is also the kind of compound activated carbon is used to reduce, which is one reason a carbon stage earns its place on city water.

Living with the system

What ownership actually looks like

Once a month

Check the salt level

Keep the salt above the water line in the brine tank. When it runs out, the softener stops softening and scale starts rebuilding on your fixtures.

Every year

Test the well

On a private well, the Florida Department of Health recommends a lab test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year. Put it on the calendar.

When the smell returns

Iron filter service

If staining or the rotten-egg smell creeps back on a well system, the filter needs attention. Call us before it fouls the softener downstream.

Advice we give every homeowner

01

Check the name on your bill first

City of Brooksville and Hernando County Utilities publish separate reports. Read the one for your utility, not a neighbor's.

02

Run the tap after water sits

The city's report advises running the tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before drinking water that has sat for hours in your pipes.

03

Iron comes out before softening

On a well, a softener asked to handle iron fouls its resin. Iron and sulfur treatment goes first, with the softener after it.

04

Water on your assigned day

Hernando County is under a water shortage order through March 31, 2027, with lawn watering limited to one day a week.

Questions we get asked

Brooksville water FAQ

Is Brooksville tap water safe to drink?

Yes. The City of Brooksville's 2025 water quality report shows every regulated contaminant under its federal limit, and the state found no potential sources of contamination near its wells. Private wells are different and should be tested every year.

Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?

That smell is hydrogen sulfide, which is common in Florida well water. It is a nuisance rather than a health hazard at typical household levels. Whole-home iron and sulfur treatment removes it before the water reaches your taps.

How hard is the water in Brooksville?

Hard, but the City of Brooksville does not publish a hardness figure, because utilities are not required to report it. Numbers you find online are estimates. Our free test measures hardness at your kitchen sink.

Is Brooksville water the same as Hernando County water?

No. The City of Brooksville runs its own utility, drawing from six deep wells. Hernando County Utilities serves most of the county outside the city, and each publishes its own annual water quality report.

Do you serve homes outside the Brooksville city limits?

Yes. We work across Hernando County, including homes on county water and private wells around Brooksville, Spring Hill and Weeki Wachee. The free water test is the same wherever you are.

How quickly does the rotten-egg smell go away?

Once a correctly sized iron and sulfur system is installed and flushed, the smell should be gone from your cold water. If it lingers only in hot water, the water heater itself may need attention too.
