Water Treatment in San Antonio, Florida
San Antonio pumps its own water from four wells, and the city says plainly that it is hard. Lake Jovita and Mirada are on Pasco County water instead, and many rural properties run private wells. We test at your sink and fix what your water actually has.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Is San Antonio, FL water hard?
Yes, and the city says so itself. The City of San Antonio's water FAQ states that the city has hard water, though its annual report does not publish a hardness number.
The water comes from four wells in the Floridan aquifer and is disinfected with chlorine, and the 2025 report shows every regulated result under its federal limit. Hard aquifer water leaves spots, crust and scale, and a softener sized to a reading from your own tap is the fix.

Who supplies water in San Antonio?
It depends on your street. The City of San Antonio pumps and treats water for homes in town, from four wells in the Floridan aquifer.
The city's own FAQ says it does not serve Mirada, Tampa Bay Golf or Lake Jovita. Lake Jovita is on a Pasco County Utilities system, and properties outside every system run private wells.
Why is San Antonio water hard?
Because it comes from limestone. Rain soaks down into the Floridan aquifer, picks up calcium and magnesium from the rock, and the city's wells pump it back up.
The city's FAQ calls its water hard. You see it as:
Spots on dishes and glass shower doors
White crust on faucets and shower heads
Scale inside the water heater and dishwasher
Soap and shampoo that won't lather
A water softener sized to your measured hardness stops all four. Your test gives us the number.
Is San Antonio city water safe to drink?
Yes. The city's 2025 report shows every regulated result under its federal limit, including nitrate at 2.8 parts per million against a limit of 10.
It also reports combined radium at 1.8 picocuries per liter, under the limit of 5, which comes from natural deposits in the aquifer. If you want to go further for drinking water, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink reduces both, and we include it free with a qualifying whole-home install.
What do private wells around San Antonio need?
A lab test, then treatment matched to the results. The Florida Department of Health recommends testing private wells for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year, and its 2023 inventory counted 15,548 parcels in Pasco County with known private wells.
Florida well water can carry iron, which stains fixtures orange, and hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. Iron and sulfur removal goes in first, sized to the well's flow rate, with a softener after it.
What happens at your free water test?
We test at your sink, confirm whether you are on city water, county water or a well, and explain each reading. The visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
If you only need a softener, that is all we quote. If your water needs nothing, we tell you.

What we install in San Antonio homes
Town water, county water and private wells all meet here. Your test tells us which you have and what it needs.

Water softener installation
Sized to your measured hardness and household. It clears the spots and crust that San Antonio's hard city water leaves behind.

Iron and sulfur removal
For private wells around town. It oxidizes and filters out iron and hydrogen sulfide, sized to the well's flow rate, ahead of a softener.
wells with stains or a sulfur smell

Reverse osmosis
An under-sink membrane system on its own faucet. It reduces nitrate, radium and dissolved minerals in the water you drink and cook with.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What San Antonio's 2025 water report shows
The City of San Antonio publishes its water report as a page on the city website. It covers four wells, about 2,000 people, and a state source water assessment that found two potential sources of contamination, both of low concern.
Every regulated result is under its limit. Nitrate reached 2.8 parts per million against a limit of 10, arsenic 1.7 parts per billion against 10, and combined radium 1.8 picocuries per liter against a limit of 5. Radium occurs naturally in aquifer rock.
The city founded by Judge Edmund Dunne as a Catholic colony still runs its own water. Its FAQ also notes that the city does not add fluoride.

Lake Jovita is different. The golf community is served by Pasco County Utilities, which pumps from two wells, removes iron with pressure sand filters and disinfects with chlorine. Its 2025 report shows total trihalomethanes at 58.4 parts per billion, under the federal limit of 80. Carbon filtration reduces these disinfection byproducts.

Living with the system
What ownership actually looks like
Once a month
Top up the salt
Keep the salt above the water line in the brine tank. When it runs out, San Antonio's hard water goes straight back to spotting your fixtures.
Every year
Test a private well
The Florida Department of Health recommends a lab test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year on any private well.
Every 6 to 12 months
RO cartridges
The pre- and post-filters protect the membrane that reduces nitrate and radium. Change them on schedule and it lasts for years.
Before you buy
Advice we give every homeowner
01
Check who sends your water bill
The City of San Antonio does not serve Lake Jovita, Mirada or Tampa Bay Golf. Those homes need the Pasco County report instead.
02
Iron goes before the softener
On a well, a softener asked to remove iron fouls its resin. Iron and sulfur treatment belongs upstream of the softener.
03
Stains need their own cleanup
Treatment stops new iron stains, but it won't lift the ones already set in a tub or toilet. Clean those once, and they stay gone.
04
Wells follow the watering rules
The shortage order covering Pasco through March 31, 2027 applies to private wells, and the city's fines start at $25.
Questions we get asked
San Antonio water FAQ
Is San Antonio, FL well water safe to drink?
Private wells are the owner's responsibility to test. The Florida Department of Health recommends a certified lab test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year. City water is different: its 2025 report shows every regulated result under its federal limit.
What causes orange staining in my toilets and tub?
Iron in well water. It is dissolved and invisible until it meets air, then it oxidizes and stains. A whole-home iron and sulfur system removes it before the water reaches your fixtures.
Do you serve Lake Jovita?
Yes. Lake Jovita is served by a Pasco County Utilities system, not the City of San Antonio, and we test and install for homes there. Its report shows chlorine disinfection and iron removal at the plant.
How hard is the water in San Antonio?
Hard. The city's own FAQ says so, although its annual report does not publish a hardness number. Our free test measures hardness at your kitchen sink, and your softener gets sized on that reading.
Is San Antonio on city water or private wells?
Both. The City of San Antonio serves homes in town from four wells. Lake Jovita, Mirada and Tampa Bay Golf are on county water, and many rural properties run private wells. Your water bill tells you which.
Will treating the water remove stains that are already there?
No. Treatment stops new iron stains from forming, but existing stains need a one-time cleaning. Once the iron is out of the water, cleaned fixtures stay clean.
