Water Treatment in Zephyrhills, Florida
Zephyrhills shares its name with a famous bottled spring water, but your tap is a different supply. The city pumps its own wells from the Floridan Aquifer and disinfects with chlorine. The water is hard, and we test it at your sink before sizing anything.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Where does Zephyrhills tap water come from?
From the city's own wells. The City of Zephyrhills Utilities pumps groundwater from the Floridan Aquifer, adds a corrosion inhibitor and disinfects it with chlorine. About 93 percent of homes inside the city limits are on its system, and it serves around 29,000 people in all, reaching past the city line.
Farther out, Zephyrhills addresses can be on Pasco County Utilities or on a private well. Your water bill names your utility, and no bill means a well.

Who supplies water in Zephyrhills?
Inside the city, the City of Zephyrhills Utilities. Pasco County's own service-area map gives the city a territory of about 19.5 square miles, and about 93 percent of homes inside the city limits are on its system.
Past that line, Zephyrhills addresses can be on Pasco County Utilities or on a private well. Your water bill names your utility.
Is your tap water the same as the bottled spring water?
No. The town shares its name with a well-known bottled spring water, but your tap is a separate supply.
City water comes from the city's own wells in the Floridan Aquifer. It is treated with a corrosion inhibitor and chlorinated before it reaches you.
Why is Zephyrhills water hard if the springs are famous?
Because the aquifer is limestone. Water that moves through limestone picks up calcium and magnesium, and those minerals are what make water hard.
You will see it as:
Spots on glassware and shower doors
White crust on faucets and shower heads
Soap and shampoo that won't lather
Scale in the water heater, where you can't see it
Why does Zephyrhills water smell like a pool?
The city disinfects with chlorine, not the chloramine that Pasco County Utilities uses. Its 2025 report shows a highest yearly average of 1.34 parts per million, well under the limit of 4.0.
Chlorine is easier to remove than chloramine. Standard activated carbon takes out the taste, which is why dual-media city water treatment works well on Zephyrhills water.
How hard is the water in Zephyrhills?
Hard, but the city does not publish a number. Hardness is not a required parameter in Florida water quality reports, so figures online are estimates.
The city's report does list total dissolved solids at 190 to 310 parts per million. We measure hardness itself at your kitchen sink during the free water test.
What about wells around Zephyrhills?
Outside the utility lines, wells bring the full aquifer package. Iron stains fixtures orange, hydrogen sulfide brings a rotten-egg smell, and hardness sits underneath both.
Those homes need iron and sulfur removal ahead of a softener, not instead of one. The Florida Department of Health recommends a yearly lab test for bacteria and nitrate on any private well.
What happens at your free water test?
We test at your sink, check for chlorine, and walk you through each reading. On a well, we also check for iron and the signs of sulfur.
If you only need a softener, that is all we quote. If your water needs nothing, we tell you.

What we install in Zephyrhills homes
Zephyrhills city water is hard and chlorinated, and homes past the city line may be on wells. Your test decides what you need.

Water softener installation
Sized to your measured hardness and the number of people in the house. On chlorinated city water, it is often the only system a home needs.
city homes with spots and scale

Dual-media city water treatment
A softener and carbon in one system. Because Zephyrhills uses chlorine rather than chloramine, the carbon has an easier job removing the taste.
homes that want the chlorine taste gone too

Reverse osmosis
An under-sink membrane system on its own faucet for drinking water, coffee and ice. The closest thing to bottled water from your own tap.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What the city's 2025 report shows
The City of Zephyrhills says its water met all federal and state requirements in 2025. Chlorine ran at a highest yearly average of 1.34 parts per million against a limit of 4.0, and disinfection byproducts were low: 8.06 parts per billion of trihalomethanes against 80, and 2.38 of haloacetic acids against 60.
Nitrate reached 3.2 parts per million against a limit of 10, and copper's 90th percentile in the latest tap sampling was 0.62 parts per million against an action level of 1.3. The report lists total dissolved solids, the minerals carried in the water, at 190 to 310 parts per million.
It does not list hardness, because Florida utilities are not required to publish it. The number that sizes a softener comes from your own tap.

The city's water comes from wells, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection reviewed them in 2025. It found 8 potential sources of contamination near the wells, all rated low susceptibility. The full results are on the state's Source Water Assessment website.

Living with the system
What ownership actually looks like
Once a month
Check the salt
Keep the salt above the water line in the brine tank. A softener that runs out stops softening, and the white crust comes back within days.
When the taste returns
Carbon media
Chlorine is what the carbon removes. When the pool taste creeps back into the tap water, the carbon is ready to be replaced.
Every 6 to 12 months
RO cartridges
Swap the pre- and post-filters on schedule and the membrane lasts for years. We set the reminder for you on install day.

Advice we give every homeowner
01
Plain carbon works here
Zephyrhills uses chlorine, not chloramine, so standard activated carbon removes the taste. You do not need the catalytic carbon county water calls for.
02
Check which side of the line
Inside the city you are likely on city water. Past the city line, your home may be on Pasco County Utilities or a well, and each needs different equipment.
03
Wells go iron-first
On a private well, iron and sulfur treatment belongs ahead of the softener. A softener asked to remove iron fouls its resin and wears out early.
04
Water on your assigned day
The water shortage order covering all of Pasco runs through March 31, 2027, private wells included. Watering is one day a week, so check your day.
Questions we get asked
Zephyrhills water FAQ
If Zephyrhills is known for spring water, why is my tap water hard?
Your tap is not the bottled supply. City water comes from the city's own wells in Florida's limestone aquifer, and water from limestone is hard. A private well draws on the same aquifer.
Is Zephyrhills tap water safe to drink?
The city's 2025 report says its water met all federal and state requirements. A private well has no report, so the Florida Department of Health recommends testing it every year.
Can I get bottled-quality water from my tap?
Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the closest thing, and most families who install one stop buying bottled water. It is included free with a qualifying whole-home installation.
How hard is Zephyrhills water exactly?
Nobody publishes a figure. Hardness is not a required parameter in Florida reports, so the city lists dissolved solids but not hardness. A free test at your tap gives you the real number.
Am I on city water or a well in Zephyrhills?
It depends on the address. Most homes inside the city are on city water, while homes past the city line can be on Pasco County Utilities or a private well. We confirm it on the free visit.
Will softened water change how coffee and tea taste?
It changes how they brew. Hardness affects extraction and leaves scale in kettles and machines, so softened water usually makes a difference. Reverse osmosis at the tap is the bigger change.
