12.3 grains per gallon. That is the average hardness the City of Tampa reported for its water in 2025, and it decides what size water softener your house needs more than any brand name does. The math takes three numbers: the people in your home, the gallons each one uses a day, and your hardness. Multiply them, and you have the grains your softener removes every day.

Quick summary: To find what size water softener you need, multiply people by daily gallons per person by hardness in grains per gallon, then pick a grain capacity that lasts about a week. A family of four on City of Tampa water removes about 3,700 grains a day, so a 32,000-grain softener regenerates about every 9 days. Iron, outdoor taps and salt settings can change that answer. Your own hardness reading matters most, because some Tampa Bay utilities publish a hardness number and some publish none.

Bottom line: A softener that regenerates about once a week is sized right for most homes.

What size water softener do I need for my home?

The water softener size you need is the grain capacity that covers about a week of your household's hardness. Grain capacity is the number of grains of hardness a softener removes before it has to regenerate, so a 32,000-grain unit removes 32,000 grains per cycle. You work out your weekly load with one multiplication.

Take the people in your home, times the gallons each person uses a day, times your hardness in grains per gallon. Penn State Extension uses 75 gallons per person per day in its own example: four people at 10 grains per gallon remove 3,000 grains a day, so a 20,000-grain softener regenerates about every 6 to 7 days.

Run that math at Tampa hardness and four people need about 25,800 grains a week. A 32,000-grain softener covers that with room to spare. We size every water softener installation this way, from your test result rather than from the box size on the shelf.

How do I find my water hardness in Tampa Bay?

You find your water hardness in your utility's annual water quality report or with a test at your own tap. The City of Tampa printed its number: the City of Tampa 2025 water quality report gives average hardness of 211 mg/L, which is 12.3 grains per gallon.

Other reports leave the hardness line out. Hillsborough County's 2025 South-Central report lists no hardness, calcium or magnesium row at all, because hardness is not a regulated contaminant. Our Brandon water quality guide explains which county report covers your street, and our Brandon water treatment page covers what we see there.

Private wells in Lutz, Odessa and rural Pasco County have no report at all, and hardness can differ from one well to the next. A well owner needs a test before choosing a size. For context, the EPA calls water above 7 grains per gallon hard and says softeners are often recommended above 10.

How many gallons of water does your household use a day?

Most sizing guides assume 50 to 75 gallons per person per day, and your water bill gives you the real number. The Water Quality Association tells installers to start from a household of four using about 200 gallons a day, which is 50 per person. Penn State Extension uses 75.

That gap moves the answer by half. Four people on Tampa water remove about 2,460 grains a day at 50 gallons each and about 3,690 at 75. The EPA's WaterSense softener guide tells you to check recent water bills and to leave out water that never needs softening, like irrigation.

The Restrepo family in Brandon did the math on a spreadsheet before calling us. They used Tampa's hardness, five people and 80 gallons each, and landed on a 48,000-grain softener. Their bill showed far less indoor use, since the sprinklers ran on a separate line, and our tap test came in below the Tampa figure. A 32,000-grain unit fit their real numbers and cost less in salt.

What changes the size of water softener you need?

Iron, total dissolved solids, hardness above 30 grains per gallon, outdoor taps and the regeneration method can all change the size or setup of the softener you need. The Water Quality Association says a softener reaches its most efficient salt settings only when the water carries less than 2 ppm of iron and less than 750 ppm of total dissolved solids.

What changes the sizing math

Factor

What it does

What to do

Iron above 2 ppm

Blocks efficient salt settings

Treat the iron first

TDS above 750 ppm

Blocks efficient salt settings

Test before you size

Hardness above 30 gpg

Some hardness can leak through

Size and set for it

Outdoor taps on the softener

Softens water you never needed soft

Bypass outdoor lines

Timer regeneration

Regenerates on a schedule, used or not

Choose demand-initiated

Iron matters most on Tampa Bay wells. A softener can take out some iron, but Penn State Extension notes that oxidized iron clogs the resin, so we often put an iron filter ahead of the softener. Our guide to what happens when a water system is sized wrong covers the signs that the math was off.

Is a bigger water softener better?

A bigger water softener is not better, because an oversized unit wastes water and salt. The EPA warns against oversizing and says efficient models use 5 gallons of water or less per 1,000 grains removed and remove more than 3,350 grains per pound of salt.

Salt is where you feel the size. The Water Quality Association asks installers to set softeners to 4,000 grains per pound of salt. At that setting, our Tampa family of four uses about 28 pounds of salt a month. At the EPA's 3,350-grain floor, the same family uses about 33 pounds.

An undersized softener has the opposite problem. It regenerates every few days, and the EPA says a typical softener uses 20 to 70 gallons of water per regeneration. Our look at how long a water softener lasts in Florida covers that wear, and our big-box softener comparison shows why the grain number on the box is only a starting point.

A water softener that fits your house regenerates about once a week, on demand, at an efficient salt setting. That one target is worth more than the biggest tank in the store. More of our sizing and hard water notes live in our hard water and softener articles.

Frequently asked questions

What size water softener does a family of four need in Tampa?

A family of four on City of Tampa water at 12.3 grains per gallon removes about 3,700 grains a day at 75 gallons per person. A 32,000-grain water softener covers that for about 9 days, which fits most Tampa homes.

How do I calculate water softener size?

Multiply the people in your home by the gallons each uses a day, then by your hardness in grains per gallon. Multiply that daily figure by 7, and choose a grain capacity at or above the weekly total.

Can a water softener be too big?

A water softener can be too big. The EPA says oversizing leads to inefficient water use, so size the softener to your weekly load rather than to the largest tank you can buy.

Does iron change what size water softener I need?

Iron changes both the size and the setup. The Water Quality Association says efficient salt settings need iron below 2 ppm, so well water above that level gets an iron filter ahead of the softener.

How often should a water softener regenerate?

A water softener sized for your home should regenerate about once a week. Penn State Extension's example targets every 6 to 7 days, and a demand-initiated valve regenerates only after you use the water.

What size water softener do I need in Florida?

The size of water softener you need in Florida depends on your local hardness, which differs between utilities and from one well to the next. Start from your utility's report or a tap test, then run the people, gallons and hardness math.
