Florida's Attorney General tells homeowners to avoid free home water tests. We run free water tests for a living, and we think the warning is right about one kind of test: the kind that changes color in a glass and ends with a price that expires tonight. To compare water treatment quotes without high-pressure sales, you need numbers on paper, an itemized price and a few days to think.

Quick summary: A fair water treatment quote rests on measured test numbers, lists every part and labor charge in writing, and stays open long enough for you to compare it. A color-change demo is not a water test. Florida's Attorney General says almost any water, even spring water, would fail one. Get two or three written quotes for the same problem, and in Florida you can cancel most in-home sales over $25 until midnight of the third business day.

What a fair water treatment quote shows

Test results

Numbers with units, in writing

A color change, no numbers

A system name only

Bottom line: If a quote cannot show you the test numbers behind it, you have nothing to compare.

How do you compare water treatment quotes without high-pressure sales?

You compare water treatment quotes by lining up three things: what each company measured, what each one proposes to install, and what each line costs. Ask for all three in writing before anyone asks for a signature. A company that tested your water can write its numbers down in a minute.

Next, check that the quotes solve the same problem. A softener quote and a reverse osmosis quote are two different jobs, so their prices tell you nothing about each other. Our guide to comparing softener companies in Tampa Bay covers the settings worth asking about, and our look at why one softener quote can be triple another explains the spread.

Last, ask who services the system and what the warranty covers, parts and labor both. Then take the quotes home and sleep on them. A fair price will still be there on Thursday.

One tip from Zach, after years of reading other companies' paperwork at kitchen tables: ask each company to write your hardness number and the system's grain capacity on the quote itself. Those two numbers show whether the system was sized for your house or pulled off a shelf. A quote that leaves them blank is asking you to trust a guess.

Is a free in-home water test just a sales pitch?

A free in-home water test is a sales pitch when it shows a color change instead of numbers. The Florida Attorney General's water treatment guidance describes salespeople who add tablets or drops to tap water and call the color change contamination. The Attorney General says almost any water would fail that demo.

A real test gives you readings with units. Our free test measures hardness in grains per gallon, plus chlorine, iron, pH, total dissolved solids and nitrite and nitrate, and we email the results within 24 hours. You can hold those numbers up against any other company's quote, or against your utility's annual water quality report.

An in-home test has limits, and we say so. Bacteria, lead and other health questions need a state-certified lab. That is why we offer certified lab testing for wells and home sales.

What do high-pressure water treatment sales tactics sound like?

High-pressure water treatment sales tactics sound urgent, official or frightening, and each one is built to stop you from comparing. The Florida Attorney General names several, including claims of government approval and prize offers that require a purchase.

On the approval claim, the Attorney General is specific: an EPA registration number on a label means the maker registered the product, not that the EPA tested or approved it.

The Mensah family in New Port Richey lived the whole list. A salesperson knocked, dropped tablets into a glass of tap water, watched it cloud and quoted a whole-house system good for that evening only. They sent him away. Our test the next week found hardness and chlorine in line with their utility's report, and they chose a drinking water fix instead. Like the big-box route, the right answer depended on their real numbers.

What does Florida law say about door-to-door water treatment sales?

Florida law gives you a three-day right to cancel most home sales over $25, and a 2026 law lets you stop uninvited sales visits. Cancel in writing by midnight of the third business day after you sign. Sunday does not count as a business day, and the seller has to refund you within 10 days.

Since July 1, 2026, a person may not make a sales pitch at a home that displays a compliant "No Commercial Solicitation" sign, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. A first violation carries a $500 noncriminal fine.

A salesperson who knocks uninvited also needs a home solicitation permit from the county clerk, under Florida Statute 501.022. The permit rule does not cover a visit you booked yourself. Our rent-or-buy guide walks through cancelling a contract, and our New Port Richey water treatment page covers local water.

When should you get a second opinion on a water treatment quote?

Get a second opinion when a quote has no test numbers, when two quotes propose different systems for the same house, or when your well water has both iron and sulfur. Each of those makes the quotes hard to line up, and a fresh test settles it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to compare water treatment quotes?

Comparing water treatment quotes takes about a week for most households. Book two or three tests, collect the written quotes, and give yourself a few evenings to line them up.

Should a water test cost money before I get a quote?

An in-home test for hardness, iron and chlorine is often free, and ours is. A certified lab test for bacteria or lead costs money, because a state-certified lab has to run it.

What can go wrong if I sign on the first visit?

Signing on the first visit can leave you with the wrong system, the wrong size or a monthly payment that costs more than you expected. You also lose the chance to compare another written quote.

Can I cancel a water treatment contract signed at home in Florida?

You can cancel most home solicitation sales over $25 in Florida until midnight of the third business day after you sign. Send the notice in writing, and keep a copy. Sunday does not count as a business day.

Does the EPA or the state approve water treatment systems?

The EPA and the state do not approve or endorse a seller's water treatment system. Florida's Attorney General says claims of government approval are false, and an EPA registration number only shows the maker registered the product.

How many water treatment quotes should I get?

Get two or three written water treatment quotes for the same problem. More than that adds work without adding much clarity, as long as each quote rests on real test numbers.
